The Greek Revival style was inspired by the
classic beauty of ancient Greek temples. Buildings of this style are
generally balanced and symmetrical. Most Greek Revival buildings have
a covered entry porch or “portico” that is composed of a
row of columns topped by a horizontal decorative band called a “frieze”,
with a triangular “pediment” at the gable. This style was
particularly popular at the time of the Civil War. |
