America's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright,
used metaphor in architecture to portray harmony between technology
and nature in his design for the Kaufmann House. Asked to design a house
in the woods with a view of a waterfall, Wright chose to make the building
a part of the natural landscape by situating the house on the waterfall
and using stone and other natural materials from the surrounding riverbank
in its construction. The Bear Run, Pennsylvania house known as Falling
water is recognized throughout the world for the striking image of its
waterfall cascading down walls of stone. |
